CHRISTMAS TRADITIONS IN THECZECH REPUBLIC

There are many unusual Christmas traditions whichstarted in the 19th century that are connected withChristmas Eve. Christmas Eve was believed to be amagical time, so people practised  different ritualsto find out what will happen to them in the future.

One of the traditions is shoe throwing. Stand abouttwo metres from your door, take a shoe into yourhand, turn with your back to the door, and throwthe shoe in the direction of the door. If the shoepoints out of the door, it means that you will getmarried in the following year. If the shoe pointsinside your house, it means that you will stay athome.

Another custom used to predict  a person's future waspouring hot lead into water. Heat the lead over a fireand then pour it into water. The various resultingshapes will tell you about your future. For example,straight line means that you will have a happy life, twocircles mean marriage, and one circle means that youwill inherit some money.

Another very common tradition practised in Czechfamilies is to cut  an apple across to predict  a  person´sfuture. The star in the apple means that you will behappy and healthy. However, if you see a cross, itmeans that you will die. If there is  a worm inside theapple,  you will probably be sick.
